REMINDER: PRODUCERS TO REGISTER BEFORE 5 NOVEMBER 2021 - EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY (EPR) & SECTION 18 REGULATIONS EXPLAINED
All identified producers are expected to comply with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations from 5 November 2021. Extended Producer Responsibility is a resource management tool whereby producers have to take over an individual “producer’s” responsibility for the end-of-life management of their used products/packaging. This can include financial and/or operational responsibility for the collection, sorting and treating these products/packaging for their recycling and recovery. This individuals responsibility can be partly transferred to a collective entity, the so-called “Producer Responsibility Organisation” (PRO).

GET READY FOR CLEAN-UP AND RECYCLE SA WEEK!
Plastics SA, the umbrella body representing the entire plastics industry, is calling on South Africans to participate in the annual Clean-Up & Recycle SA week from 13-18 September 2021, an event that has become a highlight on our country’s environmental calendar. As Douw Steyn, Sustainability Director of Plastics SA explains "This annual public awareness week is supported by all the packaging streams in South Africa, and encourages citizens, corporates and municipalities to help remove all visible litter from our country’s neighbourhoods and streets, rivers, streams, beaches and oceans".
Apart from raising awareness and supporting clean-up initiatives by donating refuse bags, gloves and other equipment needed, this will also be the 25th year that Plastics SA will be coordinating South Africa’s participation in the International Coastal Clean-Up Day – the world’s biggest volunteer effort for ocean health.
Plastics SA is hoping that this year will see a repeat of the huge success of last year’s Clean-Up & Recycle SA Week. Even though COVID-19 restrictions prohibited large groups at public clean-ups and gatherings that have become synonymous with this public awareness and volunteer effort, the spirit of camaraderie, positivity and willingness to make a difference in our environment, definitely made this one of the most memorable years.

BRINGING BUSINESS BACK: AN AUTOMATED FUTURE
The print sector has experienced continuous technological progress for the past 20 years and, as a result, has seen significant productivity benefits and reduced time-to-market. However, the speciality print sector, which FESPA represents, can still do more to achieve significant efficiency gains through process automation, particularly by streamlining workflows.
As we’re witnessing the continued rise of digital wide format printing and the industry is becoming more tech-driven, speciality printers in a variety of market segments are exploring ways to speed up production, diversify their applications, enhance the quality of their output and improve efficiency. And this means many are considering what and how to automate, recognising that there are commercial consequences if they don’t.
