CARRIER BAG AND FLAT BAG PLASTICS LEVIES
The producers of carrier bags and flat bags are excluded from Extended Producer Responsibility regulations as they pay the environmental levy already. Currently, the levy is 25 cents per shopping bag. Retailers then pay this levy to South African Revenue Services (SARS). SARS collects the levy on behalf of the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries. This levy finances waste management, litter and other schemes aimed at protecting the environment.
