CENTRAL & NORTHERN CHAMBER
CAREER DAY 2023
The Central and Northern Chamber Career Day, held on 30 November 2023 at Shereno Printers in Boksburg, Gauteng, was an important event for students to gain insight into the vast printing, packaging, signage and visual communication, and thus see it as a potential career path

The day began with a warm welcome from Board Member of Printing SA and Managing Director of Boksburg Print, Andrew Tinker. The first part of the day focused on a presentation by Jermaine Naicker, Managing Director at Printing SA who offered insight into the diverse and evolving landscape of the print, packaging, signage and visual communication's industry.

Jermaine's presentation aimed to inspire and inform students about the many opportunities available in these fields, emphasizing the potential for growth, innovation and creativity. From product, packaging and branding to visual communication and advertising. Students were encouraged to think about the impact these industries have on everyday life

Later, another presentation was made by Vanashree Pinto who spoke about the training and development projects offered by Printing SA. Students were introduced to a range of courses designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in these fields

On the 25th November 2023, Printing SA was invited to participate and sponsor the Opening Ceremony of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign in Mpumalanga, which was hosted by the Premier of Mpumalanga.

The keynote address was then being delivered by Deputy President Paul Mashatile who was supported by the Ministers of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities and Social Development.

This special invitation came as a result of the Office of the Presidency having been notified by one of our ambassadors & advocates Ms Jacki Mpondo – Hendricks, who alerted the office to the various initiatives that Printing SA has embarked on which included the successful Women in Print Event series and the Plant Tours that we recently hosted with the MEC of Gauteng Department of Economic Development.

A BIG WIN FOR THE PRINTING INDUSTRY -
THE THERMAL PAPER ROLLS DUTY REQUEST FOR AN INCREASE APPLICATION HAS BEEN GRANTED!
In 2020, Printing SA received a complaint from Thermal Converters that many tons of finished thermal point of sales (POS) roll are imported into South Africa every year. Local converters are compromised because they are not able to compete on price against the imported products.

 - Printing SA started the internal investigation if indeed other Thermal Converters were affected by the imports. After receiving overwhelming response from Thermal Converters who wanted the assistance, the process of initiating the customs duty increase started.

 - The Thermal Converters welcomes the increase but will still pursue anti-dumping application as the increase of 5% they say will not make much changes against cheap imports.

- Further, the Thermal Converters are in discussion with the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) division of Legal Metrology to determine possible regulation of finished Thermal Paper through Legal Metrology.
